The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH)

revitalizes its mathematics and physics education

with a large investment in FEMLAB

Stockholm, September 12 2002. KTH has placed a large order for FEMLAB from COMSOL. The software will be used in both research and education. In FEMLAB, students and researchers will have a tool for everything from experiments in the principles of physics to advanced research in mathematics and multiphysics. The licence includes more than 600 users at KTH Campus, KTH Kista and SCFAB. To begin with, 19 departments will have access to FEMLAB.

Users can for instance be found at KTH Kista, where FEMLAB is now the students’ main computing resource for their assignments and projects in applied mathematics and physics. The real enthusiasts behind this initiative are associate professor Carl-Mikael Zetterling, director of studies at the Department of Microelectronics and Information Technology, and associate professor Lennart Edsberg, director of studies at the Department of Numerical Analysis and Computer Science.

"During the autumn of 2002 we started a new Master of Science programme in Microelectronics in which modeling plays a central role. FEMLAB in conjunction with MATLAB provides us with the tools we need so that students can experiment with and gain a deeper understanding of the interaction between mathematics and physics”, says associate professor Carl-Mikael Zetterling.

FEMLAB

FEMLAB is a software tool for modeling and simulation of physical phenomena and multiphysics. FEMLAB uses the finite element method (FEM) for solving these models. FEMLAB is very easy to use, with a graphical user interface flexible enough for wide range of different applications; including heat transfer, fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, electromagnetics and multiphysics.

COMSOL

COMSOL was founded in 1986 and today has about 100 employees and a turnover of 155 MSEK. The company has subsidiaries in the Nordic countries, USA, UK, France and Germany plus thirteen international distributors of FEMLAB.
